THREE STUDENTS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF PLANT SCIENCE & CROP PROTECTIONAMONG THE TOP 10 POSTER AWARD WINNERS AT 6TH RUFORUM BIENNIAL CONFERENCE

Students from the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection featured very well in the just concluded 6th RUFORUM Biennial Conference which was held at the Kenyatta International Conference Center from 22nd to 26th October, 2018. Besides the oral papers presented during the conference, a total of 416 scientific posters were presented, majority of them by students. The posters were evaluated by a panel of scientists drawn from various Universities in Africa. Out of the 416 posters presented, the top 10 posters were recognized and awarded during the Gala Dinner which was held at Safari Park hotel. The top 10 students were each awarded a cash prize of USD 200. Among them were 2 students from the Department of Plant Science & Crop Protection and one student from JKUAT whose MSc research project is supported and co-supervised under the University of Nairobi Postharvest project hosted by the Department.

Details of the winning posters from the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protectionare follows

 1. Kathimba F.K. (Positions 2 and 10 out of 10).

MSc. Program: Plant Breeding and Biotechnology; Supervisors: Prof. P.M.  Kimani and Prof R. Narla (UON). Poster Titles: a) Characterization of tomato accessions for breeding research in Kenya b) Heterosis for fruit yield, yield components and bacterial wiltresistance of tomatoes genotypes in Kenya

2. Benson Maina (Position 3 out of 10).

MSc. Program: Horticulture; Supervisors: MSc. Program: Horticulture; Supervisors: Dr. Jane Ambuko & Prof Margaret Hutchinson (UON). Poster title: Effect of different waxing technologies on shelf life ofmango fruits stored under different storage conditions

3. Isaac Nyangena. (Position 5 out 10)

MSc. Program (Food Science & Technology – JKUAT); Supervisors: Dr. Jane Ambuko (UON), Prof Willis Owino and Dr. Samuel Imathiu (JKUAT). Poster title: Effect of selected drying pretreatments on physical quality attributes of dried mango chips
