The University of Nairobi Postharvest Project was invited by the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) to exhibit and showcase the project’s activities at the AWARD@10 Celebrations. The objective of the event which was held on 29th November, 2018 at the Trademark Hotel was to reflect on AWARD’s 10 year journey (since 2008), celebrate the achievements and look ahead towards a bright future. The UON Postharvest Project exhibition at the event featured low-cost postharvest management technologies that can be adopted by horticultural farmers to reduce postharvest losses.

The technologies which were exhibited and/or displayed on banners included the Coolbot™; Zero Energy Brick Cooler; Evaporative Charcoal Cooler; Waxing innovations; sanitizing agents for fruits & vegetables; packaging options (nestable crates). Also exhibited were simple technologies for small-scale processing including Tunnel Solar Dryer (developed by University of Hohenheim), Dehytray™ (developed by Purdue University), DryCard™ (developed by University of California, Davis) and a juice processing line. Some of the fruit and vegetable products processed using the various processing technologies were also show-cased. These included mango juice/pulp/concentrate, dried mango chips, mango leather, dried tomatoes, dried leafy vegetables (sukuma wiki and managu), dried/milled banana, moringa, butternut and pumpkin.

The event brought together diverse stakeholders in the AWARD community including AWARD fellows, mentors, fellow-mentees, trainers, researchers, partners among others. The UON Postharvest Project exhibition attracted many participants who wanted to know more about the exhibited technologies and products. New linkages were established for future collaborative initiatives.
