Research team led by Dr. Onesmus Kitonyo (Principal Investigator) has won the inaugural African Plant Nutrition Research Fund (APNRF) grant which is funded by the African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI).
Project title: “Fine-Tuning Climate-Smart Nitrogen Management Practices in Maize-Based Crop Systems of Eastern Kenya”.
Total sum of the grant: US$149,500, and the project is scheduled to run for three years.

The inaugural project meeting between the African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) and the University of Nairobi was held on 1st April 2022 at the Faculty of Agriculture. The meeting was officially open by Prof. Margaret J. Hutchinson (Acting Associate Vice Chancellor - Research, Innovation and Enterprise), and was attended by Prof. Moses Nyangito (Dean Faculty of Agriculture) and Prof James Muthomi (Chairman Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection). The APNI team was led by Dr. Kaushik Majumdar (Director General), Dr. Shamie Zingore (Director, Research and Development), Dr. Thomas Oberthür (Director, Business and Partnerships) and Dr. James Mutegi (Senior Program Manager).
The aim of the project is to fine-tune weather-sensitive nutrient management practices, and integrate business models that accelerate scaling of climate-smart practices in maize-based crop systems of eastern Kenya.
