Simple Storage and Small-scale Processing Technologies for Horticultural Farmers

This episode of Shamba Shape Up features the Zero Energy Brick Cooler (ZEBC), one of the technologies installed at the newly established 'Innovative Cold Storage Technologies: Research, Training and Demonstration Unit' at the field station of the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. This unit has been established with support from the National Research Fund (NRF-Kenya).

Online Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic

As a department our students are holding online learning and this has also stretched out to the postgraduate students who have their thesis ready for defence. Therefore the students who have completed their corrections should forward their names, title of the thesis and supervisors names to be scheduled for an online defence. Coffee Business in the Digital Age

Coffee is one of the major industrial crops produced in Kenya. It is the fifth largest foreign exchange earner after tourism, tea, horticulture and diaspora remittances. Coffee is the mainstay of about 800,000 households mostly rural. In the 70s and 80s, coffee was regarded as the ‘black gold’ because it raked in millions of shillings for the farmers. Kenya was then top player in the global market and the high-quality coffee from Kenya was highly sought after to blend coffees from other countries.

Food Loss and Waste Reduction Conference

In the Encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis calls for changes globally to overcome the “throw away culture.” A representation of this culture is Food Loss and Waste (FLAW), which has serious moral repercussions, in view of the prevailing hunger by more than 820 million people and lack of access to healthy diets by 2 billion people (FAO’s SOFI report 2019). Resources are ecoming scarcer, such as water and fertile lands, because food is produced but never eaten.

FOOD PROCESSING HUB LAUNCH

Dr. Jane Ambuko, UoN, described the food processing hub and its necessity to the society. In her remarks, she noted that launching of the hub at that time was to target peak season of mangoes that is almost approaching. She also added that the hub will provide a training ground for both students and other willing trainees hence a priority. She emphasized that training will commence with students in the faculty first before embarking on the other trainees.
